Tino Libaak and Gonza Alfonso, the No. 12 seeds, knocked out third seeds Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger 4-6 7-5 6-1 in the round of 16 of the Kuwait Major on Wednesday, 28 October. It is the biggest upset of the tournament so far: Lebrón and Augsburger reached the final of the Milano P1 ten days ago and were the main threat to the top seeds in their half.

Libaak and Alfonso in World Cup form

The Argentinians lost the first set but won the next two, the third one-sidedly. The International Padel Federation noted that they had already beaten the same pair, with the same score, in Madrid this season, and that both are in Argentina's squad for the FIP World Cup in Doha next week. There is a twist: Augsburger was Libaak's partner when Argentina won the 2024 world title, with Libaak winning the decisive match. Libaak and Alfonso now play Martín Di Nenno and Paquito Navarro (5), who beat Pol Hernández and Manuel Castaño 6-3 6-0.

Coello and Tapia: 50 minutes

Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia needed just 50 minutes to beat Enrique Goenaga and Guille Collado 6-2 6-1. The world No. 1s, who are without their main rivals after the withdrawal of Galán and Chingotto, face Jairo Bautista and Lucas Bergamini (10) in the quarter-finals. The FIP Gold winners in Melilla came back to beat Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas (6) 1-6 6-4 6-2.

In the bottom half, Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz (4) beat Iñigo Jofre and Juanlu Esbri 6-2 7-5 and play Edu Alonso and Aimar Goñi (11), who beat seventh seeds Fran Guerrero and Javi Leal 6-4 6-4. Marc Sintes and Coquito Zamora, who knocked out the No. 8 seeds on Tuesday, kept going with a 6-3 7-5 win over Javi García and Alex Ruiz (14). They meet Juan Tello and Maxi Arce (9) in the quarter of the draw left open by Galán and Chingotto.
