Spain and Argentina in control

Spain needed only two matches against Brazil. Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz beat Fernandez and De Avila Simonato 6-2 6-2, then Javi Leal and Arturo Coello beat Freitas and Correa 6-2 6-1. Under the regulations, the third match is not played when, by agreement between the teams, it can no longer change the result, the FIP explained.

Coello told the federation that the World Cup carries "a strong emotional component, especially when you reach the final stages". Spain captain Juanjo Gutiérrez was more cautious about Friday, saying much will depend on the match-ups and the players' condition on the day.

Argentina beat Germany 3-0 without losing a set. Fede Chingotto and Gonza Alfonso won 6-1 6-1, Leo Augsburger and Martín Di Nenno beat Lindmeyer and Fitzon 6-0 6-4, and Franco Stupaczuk and Maxi Arce beat Boehnke and Merten 6-3 6-0. The tie had a family twist: Argentina captain Gaby Reca's son Agustín was playing for Germany. Alfonso, at his first World Cup, said that "when I got the call, I felt almost like a superhero".

Portugal end the Dutch run, Italy come from behind

The Netherlands' men, who came through the qualifiers and finished second in Group A, met their match in Portugal. Miguel and Nuno Deus beat Sten Richters and Thijs Roper 6-2 6-1, and Peu Araujo and Pedro Graça sealed a 2-0 win by beating Van Opstal and Prins 6-3 6-4.

Italy had to work much harder against Sweden. Flavio Abbate and Alvaro Montiel lost the first set on a tie-break against Albin Olsson and Douglas Rutgersson before winning the next two 6-3 6-2, in a match of almost two hours. Aris Patiniotis and Giulio Graziotti also dropped the first set, 6-2, to Willy Slaryd and Adam Axelsson, then turned it round 6-2 6-4. "A World Cup is always a unique experience, where anything can happen," said Italy captain Marcela Ferrari, whose two teams are both in the semi-finals.

France women into the last four

France, the 2025 European silver medallists, went back to their usual pairs for the quarter-final, Padel Magazine noted, and made sure of the tie in two matches. Alix Collombon and Louise Bahurel beat Janine Hemmes and Tess de Vocht 6-0 6-3 in 1 hour 19 minutes, then Carla Touly and Lucile Pothier beat Marcella Koek and Bo Luttikhuis in two sets, one of them on a tie-break. It is a step up from 2024 in Doha, when France lost to Portugal in the quarter-finals, Padel Magazine recalled.

Spain beat Sweden 3-0 with three straight-set wins: Paula Josemaría and Bea González 6-0 6-1, Marta Ortega and Martina Calvo 6-0 6-2, and Andrea Ustero and Ari Sánchez 6-1 6-2. "The team is very united, both on and off the court," captain Carolina Navarro told the FIP. Argentina beat Portugal 3-0, with Delfi Brea and Claudia Jensen winning 6-0 6-0, and Italy beat Brazil 2-0 through Giulia Dal Pozzo and Emily Stellato (6-0 6-2) and Clarissa Aima and Giulia Sussarello (6-1 7-6).

What's next

The semi-finals are on Friday, 6 November, at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex; Spain v Portugal in the men's event starts at 18:00 local time. The third-place play-offs and both finals follow on Saturday, 7 November, on the Central Court. In the 5th-8th place matches, Sweden's women play the Netherlands and Portugal meet Brazil. France's men, who beat Qatar 2-0, play Mexico in the semi-finals for ninth place, while Paraguay face Chile.

What it means

Three of the four women's semi-finalists are the same as two years ago, the FIP noted, with France replacing Portugal. On the men's side, the same four nations reached the last four as at the 2024 edition in Doha, though in different semi-final pairings. Two years ago Argentina won the men's title and Spain the women's; see our World Cup preview for the full squads. For the Netherlands and Sweden, who reached the last eight in both events, as we reported in our day 3 report, the run ends in the classification matches.
