Alexander Zverev received his world No. 1 trophy on Court Central at the Paris Masters on Monday, 2 November, the day he officially rose to the top of the rankings. On the first day of the last tournament before the ATP Finals, Rafael Jodar and Lorenzo Musetti both won matches that matter in the race for Turin.
The 30th world No. 1
Zverev is the 30th man and only the second German to be ranked No. 1, the ATP noted. At 29 years, six months and 13 days, he is also the second-oldest player to reach No. 1 for the first time, behind John Newcombe in 1974, and just older than Andy Murray in 2016. More than four years have passed since he first reached No. 2, in June 2022. This season he finally won his first major titles, at Roland-Garros and the US Open.
He lifted the trophy with ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi and tournament director Cédric Pioline on court, joined by his team, including his father and his brother Mischa. "It's incredibly special to celebrate it here in Paris, where a couple of months ago I won my first Grand Slam title," he said. "It's a team effort. We've been together for many, many years now." Zverev arrives after losing to Alex de Minaur in the Vienna semi-finals and has a difficult opener: Musetti, in the second round.
Jodar strikes first in the race
Jodar, 20, entered the top 10 for the first time on Monday and celebrated with a 6-2 6-3 win over Alejandro Tabilo, a week after beating him for the loss of six games in Basel. He is ninth in the live Race to Turin, the last qualifying place this year, so every win in Paris puts pressure on the players around him. "I'm enjoying it and am happy to get the first win," said Jodar, who is playing Paris for the first time. He now leads Tabilo 4-1 in their head-to-head and plays Casper Ruud next, after the Norwegian beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3 6-2.
Musetti, another player chasing a place, beat Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(3) 7-6(10), his first win in Paris since his quarter-final run in 2022. French player Luca Van Assche beat Mariano Navone 6-3 7-5 for his first win at his home Masters 1000.
Djokovic v Vacherot on Tuesday
Novak Djokovic, who needs a deep run to stay in contention for Turin after his loss to Jan-Lennard Struff in Basel, opens against Valentin Vacherot. The Monegasque won the Basel title on Sunday and beat Djokovic on his way to the Shanghai title 13 months ago. "It's my last tournament of the season. Technically, tomorrow night, my season could be over," Vacherot told the ATP. "I can give it everything." Follow every score on our tennis results page.
