Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is a Masters 1000 champion. The Spaniard beat compatriot Rafael Jodar 1-6 7-6(5) 6-4 in Sunday's final of the Shanghai Masters, recovering from a set and a break down to win the biggest title of his career in 2 hours 28 minutes.
From 1-6, 2-3 down
Jodar, 20, started as he had finished his semi-final against Daniil Medvedev: he broke in the second game and again for 5-1, and took the first set without facing a break point, the ATP reported. When he broke again early in the second set to lead 3-2, the title looked within reach.
Davidovich Fokina broke straight back, sprinting forward to convert his second break point of the game, then held from 3-4 to 6-5 and won the tie-break 7-5. The players traded breaks early in the decider before the 25th seed broke again in the fifth game and served it out, winning on his second match point when Jodar could not return his serve, the Associated Press reported. "I don't have any words right now," he said, adding that Jodar was "an amazing player and it was very tough to play against him today."
From losing finals to winning them
The title completes a striking transformation. Davidovich Fokina lost the first five tour-level finals of his career, including the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters; he has now won his last three — Mallorca, Chengdu and Shanghai, all in 2026. He also extended his winning streak in China to ten matches, after upsetting top seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals and saving a match point against Frances Tiafoe earlier in the week.
He rises 13 places to a career-high No 13 in Monday's rankings.
What it means for Jodar
For Jodar, the defeat ends a historic week rather than spoils it. He rises two places to a career-high No 11 — a title would have given him his top-10 debut — and leaves Shanghai ninth in the Race to Turin, just inside the cut for the ATP Finals with Jannik Sinner out for the season. The chasers include Novak Djokovic, who plays Basel next week; our Race explainer has the full picture.
The tour moves on to the ATP 250 events in Brussels, Almaty and Lyon this week, before Basel, Vienna and the Paris Masters. Follow them on our live tennis scores and the updated ATP rankings.
