Key points
  • Sinner confirmed in a press release on Friday 6 November that Darren Cahill will leave his team at the end of the 2026 season.
  • Magnus Norman, the former world No. 2 who coached Stan Wawrinka to three major titles, joins for 2027.
  • With Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, Sinner won five Grand Slam titles, two ATP Finals and 10 Masters 1000 titles.
  • Sinner's 2026 season is already over because of a knee injury; he will not play the ATP Finals in Turin.

Jannik Sinner confirmed on Friday, 6 November, that Darren Cahill will leave his coaching team at the end of the 2026 season. In the same press release, the Italian announced that Magnus Norman, the Swede who guided Stan Wawrinka to three major titles, will join him for 2027.

Norman will work alongside Simone Vagnozzi, who stays on as part of the team, according to Sky Sports and Tennis Majors. The news ends weeks of reports: The Times had named Norman as Cahill's likely successor in late October.

The end of a long goodbye

The split is not a surprise. In January 2025 Sinner confirmed that 2025 would be Cahill's final year in his corner, the ATP reported at the time. Cahill then agreed to stay for one more season, and this time the farewell is official.

Both men paid tribute in the announcement. "Darren has been an incredibly important part of my journey," Sinner said, as reported by the ATP and Sky Sports, thanking the Australian for his belief, honesty and dedication. Cahill described the job as "a special honour and privilege" (ATP Tour) and added: "Trust, honesty and belief only work when it's exchanged both ways."

What Sinner won with Cahill

Cahill joined Sinner's team in June 2022. Together with Vagnozzi, he helped turn him into the leading force of men's tennis. Over four and a half seasons Sinner won five Grand Slam titles, two Nitto ATP Finals and 10 ATP Masters 1000 titles, according to the ATP.

Sinner first reached world No. 1 in June 2024 and has spent 95 weeks at the top. His fifth major came at Wimbledon in July 2026, his second title at the All England Club. Earlier in the year he won the Italian Open in Rome, which made him only the second man after Novak Djokovic to win all nine Masters 1000 events, the so-called Career Golden Masters.

Who is Magnus Norman?

Norman is a former world No. 2. As a coach he is best known for his work with Wawrinka, who won the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 Roland-Garros and 2016 US Open under his guidance. He also worked with fellow Swedes Thomas Johansson and Robin Söderling.

Norman has just finished a second spell with Wawrinka, who played his last tournament at the Swiss Indoors in Basel last week. That timing left the Swede free to start a new project at the very top of the game.

What comes next for Sinner

Sinner will not play again in 2026. He has not competed since his Wimbledon title in July, and on 6 October he announced that a knee injury had ended his season, saying "the 2026 season is officially over" (ATP Tour). He was the first player to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, where he is the two-time defending champion, but he will miss the event, which runs from 15 to 22 November.

In his absence, Alexander Zverev rose to No. 1 on 2 November and, according to Sky Sports, is now certain to finish 2026 at the top of the rankings.

What it means

The change keeps the structure that worked for Sinner: two coaches, with Vagnozzi as the constant. Cahill brought experience at the very top of the game; Norman brings a record of turning a talented player into a multiple major champion. Their first test together will be Sinner's return from injury, with the 2027 season as the first big target.
