Medvedev back in Turin

Medvedev missed the ATP Finals last year for the first time in six seasons. Since his US Open loss to Frances Tiafoe, he has won titles in Hangzhou and Almaty and reached the semi-finals in Shanghai and Beijing. His reward for beating Mannarino is a semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Tommy Paul 6-4 7-6.

Zverev will be No. 1 on Monday

Alexander Zverev made sure of the top ranking by reaching the quarter-finals with a 6-4 7-5 win over Tallon Griekspoor on Thursday, and he will replace Jannik Sinner as world No. 1 in Monday's rankings. On Friday he needed only 58 minutes to beat Britain's Arthur Fery 6-0 6-2, in a repeat of their Wimbledon semi-final. He plays Alex de Minaur next. The Australian beat Matteo Berrettini 7-6(4) 6-2 and would move into eighth place in the race by beating Zverev, Tennis Now noted, although Zverev leads their head-to-head 9-4.

Cobolli injured, Djokovic out

The race also lost two contenders this week. Flavio Cobolli, who is still inside the qualifying places, retired in tears at 2-5 in the first set against Berrettini on Thursday, apparently with a muscle injury, Tennis Majors reported. The extent of the injury was still being assessed, and it could put his Paris, Turin and Davis Cup Finals plans at risk.

In Basel, Djokovic lost 6-7 7-5 7-6 to Struff, the German's first win in nine meetings with the Serbian. Djokovic stays 11th in the race and needs a big result at the Paris Masters to make up the gap. Top seed Ben Shelton, already qualified, lost to Swiss wild card Jerome Kym, and Rafael Jodar, ninth in the race, lost to Valentin Vacherot. On Friday, Taylor Fritz reached the semi-finals when Arthur Fils retired at 6-2 2-0, Vacherot beat Holger Rune 6-3 3-6 6-3, and Struff beat Nuno Borges 6-2 6-3.

Saturday's semi-finals

In Vienna, Alcaraz plays Medvedev and Zverev faces de Minaur. In Basel, Fritz meets Vacherot and Struff plays Jiri Lehecka. All results are on our tennis results page.
