A summer without the big two

Both draws were missing the sport's two dominant players. Jannik Sinner skipped Montreal and then, on 9 August, pulled out of Cincinnati with a right knee problem, telling the ATP that the knee had been bothering him. Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning Cincinnati champion, was still recovering from the wrist injury that had kept him off the tour since April.

The top seeds did not fill the gap. In Montreal, top seed Alexander Zverev lost his opening match to Tallon Griekspoor 6-7(3) 6-2 6-4. In Cincinnati, Novak Djokovic struggled in the Ohio heat and lost his second-round match to Thiago Agustin Tirante 2-6 6-4 6-4, a result the ATP described as the biggest win of the Argentine's career.

Shelton defends his Canadian title

Shelton, seeded fifth, won six matches in Montreal without dropping a set. In the semi-finals he beat Learner Tien 6-2 6-3, his first win over the American after two defeats, and in the final he beat Brandon Nakashima 6-3 7-6(4) in one hour and 27 minutes without facing a break point.

According to the ATP, Shelton became only the fourth man this century to defend the Canada title, after Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. It was his second Masters 1000 title, his seventh tour-level trophy and his fourth of the season after Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart. "I couldn't be happier with the way I won this week," he said, as reported by the ATP.

Jodar's first Masters semi-final

The breakthrough story of the Montreal week belonged to Rafael Jodar. The 19-year-old Spaniard beat Fils 7-6(5) 6-3 in the quarter-finals to reach his first Masters 1000 semi-final, where he met Nakashima, also playing his first semi at that level. The American came through 7-6(3) 6-4 to reach his first Masters 1000 final, a run that lifted him to a career-high No. 22.

Nakashima backed it up in Cincinnati, where he beat Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals before losing to Frances Tiafoe in the last four.

Fils ends France's wait in Cincinnati

Fils, seeded 21st, beat Alex de Minaur on his way to the semi-finals, where he defeated world No. 10 Flavio Cobolli. The final against Tiafoe swung sharply. Fils took the opener 6-3, Tiafoe dominated the second set 6-1, and the Frenchman then won the decider 6-0. He served 11 aces according to ESPN and converted four of eight break points according to the ATP.

The title made Fils the first French Masters 1000 champion since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto in 2014, and only the second Frenchman to win Cincinnati after Guy Forget in 1991. "To be able to win one title like this means a lot to me," he said, as reported by the ATP. The run lifted him ten places to a career-high No. 11.

For Tiafoe, it was a second defeat in a Cincinnati final, after losing to Sinner in 2024. "Losing on Sunday sucks," he said, according to ESPN.

What it meant for the season

With Sinner and Alcaraz absent and Zverev beaten early in both events, the summer Masters belonged to the next tier of contenders. Shelton added a fourth title to his season, Fils climbed to fifth in the Race to Turin according to the ATP, and Jodar showed he could go deep at the biggest events away from clay. The swing also set the scene for the US Open, where Zverev went on to beat Shelton in the final in September.
