Barcelona: Alcaraz's wrist gives way

Alcaraz arrived in Barcelona days after losing the Monte-Carlo final and the No 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner. He beat Otto Virtanen 6-4 6-2 in his opening match on 14 April, but needed treatment on his right wrist during the match.

The Spaniard explained the next day how it happened. "After a return, my wrist gave way," he said, as quoted by the ATP Tour, adding that the discomfort grew worse as the match went on and that tests showed "a slightly more serious injury than we all expected". He withdrew on 15 April before his meeting with Tomas Machac, according to ESPN. The problem kept him out of Madrid, Rome, Roland-Garros and Wimbledon.

Fils returns to the winner's circle

Without the two-time champion, ninth seed Fils took the title. He saved two match points against Terence Atmane in the first round, then beat Brandon Nakashima, second seed Lorenzo Musetti and Rafael Jodar to reach the final.

There he beat Andrey Rublev 6-2 7-6(2) on 19 April, hitting 31 winners to 10. Fils served for the title at 5-3 in the second set and fell 6-5 behind before breaking back and winning the tie-break. It was his fourth career title and his first since a back injury cost him eight months in 2025. The ATP Tour said he became only the second Frenchman to win Barcelona in the Open Era, after Thierry Tulasne in 1985, and he rose to No 25.

Munich: Shelton's clay statement

On the same day in Munich, second seed Shelton beat fourth seed Flavio Cobolli 6-2 7-5 to win the BMW Open, a year after losing the final to Alexander Zverev. Cobolli had knocked out Zverev in the semi-finals, while Shelton beat Alex Molcan.

The ATP Tour noted that Shelton became the first American to win three ATP 500 titles since the category began in 2009, and the first American to win a clay title above ATP 250 level since Andre Agassi in Rome in 2002. "I have big ambitions for the clay courts," he said. It was his fifth tour-level title and second on clay.

Hamburg: a qualifier from Peru

The last 500 event on clay before Roland-Garros produced the biggest surprise. Buse, a 22-year-old Peruvian, came through two qualifying rounds, then beat defending champion Cobolli in the first round and Jakub Mensik in the second.

In the final on 23 May he beat sixth seed Tommy Paul 7-6(6) 4-6 6-3 in just over three hours at Am Rothenbaum, despite needing treatment for dizziness early in the match.

Buse became Peru's first ATP singles champion since Luis Horna in 2007 and, per the ATP Tour, only the third qualifier to win an ATP 500 event since 2009. He climbed to a career-high No 31. "It's the best feeling in my entire life," he said.

What it meant

The 500 events gave the spring a different set of winners from the Masters 1000 tournaments, which Sinner swept. Shelton carried his form further, adding the Stuttgart grass title in June to complete titles on three surfaces in 2026. For Alcaraz, the Barcelona injury turned into the longest absence of his season.
