Wawrinka, Thiem Awarded US Open Wild Cards

We may never see the pair of former champs in Flushing Meadows again.

A pair of former US Open champions have been awarded US Open men’s singles wild cards.

2016 champion Stan Wawrinka and 2020 champion Dominic Thiem will enter this year’s draw, along with six other wild cards, the US Open announced on Wednesday.

39-year-old Wawrinka, a three-time major champion, and 30-year-old Thiem, playing in his last major, are joined by Chris Eubanks, Zachara Zvajda, Learner Tien, Matthew Forbes, Alexandre Muller and Tristan Schoolkate.

Tien won the US Open wild card challenge, while Forbes won the USTA National Championships 18s at Kalamazoo last weekend.

Thiem is set to retire at Vienna in October. He is currently ranked 211.

39-year-old Wawrinka is ranked 141. He is 5-11 on the season.
