Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev plans to play this clay season as he has been announced as a wildcard recipient for Geneva.
Medvedev, ranked at No. 2 in the world, hasn’t played since losing in the Miami Masters quarterfinal versus Hubert Hurkacz.
Shortly after the loss, Medvedev decided to undergo a sports hernia surgery.
Medvedev announced he would be out for at least a month and his clay season was in jeopary.
In recent days, Medvedev returned to the practice court.
Medvedev has missed the majority of the clay season as he was forced to skip the Masters events in Monte Carlo and Madrid.
Medvedev also won’t be playing in Rome next week but from May 15 he will be playing Geneva.
Medvedev set for a Geneva debut
Medvedev has no previous appearances in Geneva so he will be making his first appearance at the Swiss clay event.
Geneva is an ATP 250 events and takes place the week before the French Open but several big names are set to play at the tournament.
Besides Medvedev, defending champion Casper Ruud, 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov and 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem are also expected to play.
Medvedev hasn’t played in a month and a half so it shouldn’t be a surprise if he struggles in his first tournament back.
However, Medvedev won’t have big expectations in Geneva and he likely won’t put too much expectation on himself to do well at Roland Garros.
It is not a secret that Medvedev doesn’t like clay courts but he certainly wants to use every chance he can to compete at a Grand Slam.
After the French Open, Medvedev’s next chance at a Grand Slam glory won’t come until September.
Last month, Wimbledon announced Russian players won’t be allowed to compete at The Championships.
Medvedev has been out for quite some time so he has yet to address the Wimbledon decision.
