The scandalous structural conditions of the WTA Finals in Cancun

The 2023 women’s season of the WTA circuit will end with the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico, in which the world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka, the Polish and Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek, the US Open champion Coco Gauff, the Kazakh and Australian Open finalist Elena Rybakina, the American Jessica Pegula, the Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and the Greek Maria Sakkari, who replaces the Czech Karolina MuchovĆ  who withdrew due to a wrist problem.

The current situation of the venue of the WTA Finals 2023

Just four days before the start of the tournament, which will start on October 29, the structure is not yet completed as demonstrated by a tweet shared by Polish journalist Mateusz Wasiewski. From the post shared on his account We remember that, once again, a Mexican city saved the correct conduct of the WTA Finals (in 2021 they were held in Guadalajara, ed.). From next year the competition will be held in Saudi Arabia after an important agreement reached by the WTA. The journalist underlined how the organizers are doing their utmost to ensure the success of the tournament held by the Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia. Furthermore, he uploaded the video of the arena’s stands which currently consist only of a series of tubes and this has led to a major concern for the holding of the end-of-year tournament. Furthermore, the choice of venue caused discontent among the tennis players involved in both singles and doubles. This is due to the long journey to get to Mexico and the presence of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals on the European continent the following week which entails a rather long return journey for the involved tennis players.
