Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova made good on her first-round win at the Hong Kong Open by taking out Beatriz Haddad Maia in their second-round encounter. Pavlyuchenkova posted a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 win over the Brazilian, the second seed at this tournament.
Haddad Maia generated more break points on Pavlyuchenkova’s serve as compared to the latter on her serve. However, of the 11 break points she had, the southpaw could only convert three. She, however, conceded four break points of the five she faced.
Now, following Haddad Maia’s exit, Elise Mertens’s the highest seed left in Hong Kong.
The Belgian, who’s playing as the third seed, scored a straight-sets 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Sofya Lansere, a qualifier into the main draw. Mertens needed a little over three minutes to get the win.

Two other seeds playing their round-of-16 match-ups posted contrasting results.
Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo ousted fourth-seeded Xinyu Wang 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 15 minutes.
Sorribes Tormo’s set up a quarter-final against fifth-seeded Anna Blinkova.
Italian sixth seed Martina Trevisan, however, won her three-set clash against Magdalena Frech. After two hours and 46 minutes, Trevisan secured a 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 triumph.
Lastly, the two finalists of the 2023 junior Australian Open girls exited the Hong Kong Open in the second round. Leylah Fernandez beat the Australian Open girls’ runner-up, Mirra Andreeva 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. A fellow teenager Linda Fruhvirtova got the better of the girls’ titles at Melbourne Park, Alina Korneeva. The Czech notched a 6-3, 7-5 win after 91 minutes of play.
