Bjorn Borg shares his disappointment after the Laver Cup defeat

Team World won the 2023 edition of the Laver Cup by beating Team Europe 13-2: John McEnroe, winning captain, triumphed over Bjorn Borg.

A real domination of the team composed mainly of North Americans with the exception of the Argentine Francisco Cerundol, also thanks to the many absences of the European team, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to name a few.

In the final press conference of the competition held in Vancouver, captain Bjorn Borg explained the reasons for the European debacle.

The former Swedish champion said he was obviously disappointed with the final result: “It was a good week for us, we trained and didn’t get together, there was team spirit and we gave 100 percent. Team World he played incredibly, in all the matches he played very well.

Obviously we are very disappointed, you never expect a result like this, but what else can you say? They played great tennis. Looking to Berlin next year, I’m sure it will be another year. At the moment we are disappointed.”

However, the 11-time slam champion still praised his players for their commitment on the court: “The team spirit was very good, we remained united, we spent a lot of time together and we talked a lot. Team members talk to each other a lot. We give each other advice on what to do and what not to do, next week will certainly be a very different tournament for these guys, as a team we have always wanted to do well.

Now we’re all sitting here, disappointed, but they have a lot to do in the future, the goal is to do well until the end of the year. Unfortunately these things happened during the Laver Cup, we lost. I never expected to lose 13-2, but I still say they played well. Next year in Berlin will be completely different.”

Finally, the former tennis player analyzed the progress of his team’s matches, which in his opinion was lacking in the decisive moments.

He said: “Unfortunately we didn’t win any of the key points, even though everyone showed an excellent level of tennis. So did we, but we always lost in those moments. If it had happened on our side, maybe the result would have been different.

I’m happy with my team, I’m happy with the boys, who took a lot of responsibility to do what they had to do. They all gave 100%, so in that sense there are no complaints.”
