Serbia defeated South Korea without Novak and will face Spain on Friday. Djokovic will not face Alcaraz, with the Spaniard deciding to skip the Group Stage and take some rest following the US Open semi-final loss. Novak is eager to help his country en route to another Davis Cup title, making it one of his priorities by the end of the year. Djokovic is spending his 390th week as world no. 1 following his latest success in New York, securing his 36th Major crown at 36 and extending his incredible legacy. Novak celebrated at the US Open for the first time in five years, beating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 in the title clash after three hours and 16 minutes.
Novak endured endless rallies and physical struggles, keeping his focus and defending a set point in the crucial second set that sent him miles in front. The Serb lost serve once and produced three return games, enough to emerge at the top in straight sets. Djokovic served at 54%, drawing the most from that and offering his rival only a couple of chances. Also, Novak rushed to the net after the serve, breaking Daniil’s pattern and controlling the pace in the rallies with 38 winners and 35 unforced errors. Djokovic grabbed a break at love in the encounter’s second game and moved 3-0 up in no time. Medvedev saved two break points in the eighth game before Djokovic wrapped up the set with a hold at 15 at 5-3, clinching the opener after almost 50 minutes. The second set lasted an hour and 45 minutes, standing as one of the most extended ones of Novak’s career! Medvedev pushed Djokovic to the limits, wasting his chance and falling two sets to love behind.
Novak Djokovic will play for Serbia at this week’s Davis Cup.
Novak served perfectly in the early stage, and the set could have reached two hours without that! World no. 2 missed a break chance at 3-3 and squandered game points in the next one to experience the first break point of the match. Djokovic denied it with a half-volley winner, bringing the game home after four deuces and staying on the positive side. There were four deuces on Novak’s serve in the 12th game while he served to stay in the set, offering Daniil a set point. Djokovic denied it with a bold net rushing and a volley winner, introducing a tie break. Daniil led 3-1 before Novak climbed back, stealing the breaker 7-5 after the rival’s backhand error, gaining a massive confidence boost after two and a half hours of a titanic battle. Djokovic served well at the start of the third set, securing a break in game four and opening a 3-1 advantage after Medvedev’s wayward backhand. The Russian pulled it back in the next one, fighting like a lion and seeking a comeback after his only successful return game. Instead, Novak broke him for the second straight time in the sixth game, opening a 4-2 gap and moving closer to the finish line. Djokovic served for his 24th Major crown in game nine and held after Medvedev’s forehand error, celebrating another magical moment of his glorious career.
