Alexander Zverev after an unbelievable victory: ‘I’m back’

Alexander Zverev met Jannik Sinner in the US Open fourth round at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The German played his 15th match versus the top-10 rivals at Majors and scored the second victory, prevailing 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in four hours and 40 minutes! Alexander was thrilled with his best victory since returning from an injury, feeling great emotions and announcing his comeback! Zverev did not look good after the fourth set. However, he found the remaining pieces of energy to deliver an early break in the final set and bring the victory home. The German fired 16 aces and played better in the crucial moments. Zverev landed 56 winners and 46 unforced errors, welcoming Sinner’s almost 70 mistakes. The German converted six out of 14 break chances, defending eight out of 12 opportunities offered to his opponent and emerging at the top. The opening set saw numerous deuces, lasting 68 minutes. They traded breaks in the middle of the set before Alexander clinched another at 4-4. Zverev held at love in game ten to secure the opener and make a notable start. Sinner raised his level and forged a 3-0 advantage in the second set. Zverev pulled a break back before experiencing another setback at 2-3 to fall behind.

Jannik served well in games seven and nine to wrap up the set and level the overall score after an hour and 50 minutes. The German recovered his game in the third set, serving well and mounting the pressure on his rival in three return games. Sinner survived five break chances in the fourth game before losing ground. Alexander delivered breaks in games six and eight, clinching the set 6-2 and hoping to seal the deal in the fourth. The German denied break chances in the opening game, and they stayed close to each other until 4-4.

The Italian secured a break in the ninth game and held in the next one to grab the set 6-4 and force a decider after three hours and 50 minutes! Alexander made one last push and secured an early break in game two after Jannik’s tired backhand. Zverev squandered game points in the next one and offered Sinner a break chance. The German saved it with a volley winner and produced a massive hold that pushed him 3-0 up and closer to the finish line. They served well in the upcoming games, and Alexander served for the victory at 5-3. He came from 30-15 down and sealed the deal with a service winner, celebrating a tremendous win, his most notable one after returning from an injury.

Obviously, I would have loved to play a slightly shorter match. Still, I remember everything I felt last year when I could not compete due to injury. I missed this emotion, playing beyond 01:30 in the morning in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium. There is nothing better than this,” Alexander Zverev said.
