Juan Martin del Potro has announced that he won’t be able to compete at this year’s US Open since his knee is still causing him pain. Del Potro, 34, retired from pro tennis in 2022 February by competing in front of his home fans in Buenos Aires. But earlier this year, former world No 3 del Potro revealed he was working on playing one more time at the US Open – where he lifted his lone Grand Slam title in 2009. Unfortunately, del Potro’s troublesome knee is still causing the pain to the Argentine and the 2009 US Open champion won’t be competing at Flushing Meadows this year.

I pursued every possible means in order to get there, but my body is not 100 percent with me to let me feel comfortable and content to share in such a unique moment one more time with you all. The pain I feel wonāt let me focus on a return yet. I will keep looking for better alternatives in order to regain my quality of life. Throughout his career, del Potro battled various injuries and went under the knife numerous times. In 2019 June, del Potro suffered a kneecap fracture at the Queen’s Club. For del Potro, it was his second serious knee injury in a span of nine months. Although del Potro was working on returning to tennis after suffering the injury in 2019, his knee just wasn’t progressing well. In early 2022, del Potro returned to tennis after two and a half years for just one tournament and one match so his retirement could come on the court.Ā
