The US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, will begin on August 28th. The most awaited tennis stars on the planet will return to Flushing Meadows to play for the last Grand Slam title and put an end to the season on US hard courts.
There are several and already announced absences: from Rafael Nadal, still out due to injury, to Naomi Osaka, who gave birth a few weeks ago.
The US Open, however, will also offer exciting returns: the Grand Slam tournament has announced its wild cards, men and women.
Just in the women’s singles there are the most awaited names. Venus Williams, the 43-year-old American, two-time champion in New York, will play the main draw of her home Grand Slam for the 24th time. Another wild card to Caroline Wozniacki, who reached two finals in Flushing Meadows, and who returns to New York after three years of absence and two pregnancies.
The Americans Kayla Day, Ashlyn Krueger, Robin Montgomery, Clervie Ngounoue, the French Fiona Ferro and the Australian Storm Hunter complete the list.
The menĀ wild cards
No singles Slam champion is included, at most an ATP Masters 1000 winner, but also a doubles Slam winner. The scheme used for the assignment is the same used for the women wild cards: a French one, an Australian, the rest of the US.
List includes: Benjamin Bonzi, Rinky Hijikata, John Isner, Steve Johnson, Alex Michelsen, Michael Mmoh, Ethan Quinn, Learner Tien. No wild cards for players who are about to return to the Tour: from Kei Nishikori to Milos Raonic, both also out of the Cincinnati tournament.
While for John Isner, the only ATP Masters 1000 champion on the list, it is the second consecutive wild card after the one received at the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, preparatory tournament and second home tournament for him of this part of the season.
