Danielle Collins explains what makes Iga Swiatek such a difficult opponent

Danielle Collins says Iga Swiatek is “very precise with her shots” and “runs down a lot of balls” after losing to the Pole in Montreal. On Friday, former world No 7 Collins exited Montreal in the quarterfinal after top-seeded Swiatek handed the American a 6-3 4-6 6-2 loss.Ā

ā€œItā€™s pretty tricky when you play the world No 1. Sheā€™s very precise with her shots. She runs down a lot of balls. There were a couple points here and there that I lost. Ultimately it determined the outcome of those sets,” Collins said, via The Tennis Letter.Ā

Collins fell short to Swiatek in three sets

Swiatek made a very good start to the match, breaking Collins early for a 3-0 lead. In the sixth game, Swiatek broke Collins again to go up by a double break and take a 5-1 lead. Swiatek failed to serve out for the first set in the seventh game but managed to do so in the ninth game. After winning the first set, Swiatek also opened a 2-0 lead in the second set. Down by a set and a break, Collins refused to quit as she broke Swiatek in the fourth and 10th games to overturn the deficit and force a decider. After losing the second set, Swiatek bounced back in the third set as she broke Collins in the third and seventh games to complete a three-set win.Ā

ā€œI really wanted to play powerful and Iā€™m pretty happy that I managed to even increase the power in the third set. For sure, I was looking for that. Today I felt like I really needed to go even higher in terms of the intensity. Iā€™m really proud of myself that I made it to the semis. Iā€™m happy that I can play another match,” Swiatek said after beating Collins.Ā

Swiatek now owns a 3-1 head-to-head against Collins.
