World No 1 Iga Swiatek has learned her projected path to winning it all in front of her home fans at the Warsaw Open. In Warsaw, No 1 seed Swiatek will be kicking off her campaign by playing against world No 181 Nigina Abduraimova. In the Warsaw round-of-16, Swiatek is projected to meet Claire Liu, the American she has already crushed twice this year. The Warsaw quarterfinal is projected to be Swiatek’s first match against a seeded player as the Pole could very easily meet No 8 seed Linda Noskova. In the semifinal, Swiatek is projected to meet third-seeded Katerina Siniakova. The Warsaw final is projected to be a rematch of this year’s French Open final between Swiatek and No 2 seed Karolina Muchova.

Swiatek aiming for her first Warsaw title
Last year – while the Warsaw Open was still played on clay – Swiatek suffered a surprise quarterfinal defeat to Caroline Garcia. After the 2022 Warsaw Open edition, the tournament organizers decided to switch from clay to hard because it made more sense to be staging a hard-court tournament in this part of the season. Although it’s a different surface now, Swiatek’s goal remains the same and there is no doubt that the Pole will be extremely motivated to win it all in front of her home fans. During this past season, Swiatek didn’t win any titles but she made the Bad Homburg semifinal and Wimbledon quarterfinal. In Bad Homburg, Swiatek appeared to be cruising toward her first grass title but then suffered food poisoning just before her semifinal match. Then, Swiatek reached her first Wimbledon quarterfinal before suffering a surprise defeat to Elina Svitolina. Although Swiatek didn’t win any titles during the grass season, she said afterward that she was happy with the improvement she made on the surface. Now, Swiatek returns to hard courts and it will be interesting to see if she can win Warsaw before going to Canada for a WTA 1000 event in Montreal.
