Marketa Vondrousova wrote history by reaching the final at Wimbledon 2023. It was since 1963 that an unseeded tennis player had not reached the final in London. The Czech tennis player took care of breaking the spell. Marketa eliminated Elina Svitolina with a double 6-3 and conquered the second Grand Slam final in her career, the first on the lawns of the All England Club.
Vondrousova played a perfect first set and managed to make up for the only serious empty pass in the second. 4-0 ahead, the Czech woman gave up her serve twice in a row and put Svitolina back into the game.
Vondrousova, however, has found her tennis and once again put distance between herself and her opponent.
Marketa Vondrousova’s emotion: “It’s crazy to be in the final”
In the press conference, the CzechĀ showed all her emotion for this important milestone: “It’s crazy. It was a very tough game. I’m just very happy that I stayed focused in the end. It was hard to imagine performance like this on grass, because I haven’t played much on this surface. After the surgery, I didn’t play for almost six months, and it was a really tough time. I’m grateful to be here, it’s crazy that this is actually happening.”
Just at Wimbledon, in 2019, the Czech tennis player had sustained a bad injury to her left wrist: “It’s not easy to come back after two surgeries. You don’t know if you’ll be able to play at high levels again. I’m really happy to be able to play without pain. I feel like a different player and person than when I played my first Grand Slam final. This helps me in difficult moments. I was still too young at the time.”
The Czech will face Ons Jabeur in the final: “We are similar in some ways. We both play the drop shot and the slice very well. Last year she reached the final at Wimbledon and the US Open, so she’s used to it. We are talking about a Grand Slam final: it will be a tough match regardless of the tennis player I will face.”
