Rothesay International: Camila Giorgi upsets Ons Jabeur in pre-quarter-finals

Camila Giorgi took out Ons Jabeur in their round-of-16 match at the Rothesay International on Wednesday. The Italian prevailed 6-3, 6-2 in 72 minutes over the fourth seed.

In the first set, Jabeur didnā€™t win a single game on her serve as both players traded breaks in the first six games of the set. Giorgi was the one to break this dominance of the returner and converted a fourth break on the Tunisianā€™s serve to take the lead in the match. The second set went Giorgiā€™s way from the set and Jabeur wasnā€™t able to make any comebacks into the match.

Giorgi will play Jelena Ostapenko next. Ostapenko got past Harriet Dart, 6-3, 6-4 in 90 minutes. The Latvianā€™s now got a winning streak of seven matches going back to winning run at the Rothesay Classic in Birmingham last week. Ostapenko had also defeated Giorgi in the semi-finals of the Rothesay Classic, in 2022.

Rothesay International: Beatriz Haddad Maia injured

Eighth seed Beatriz Haddad Maiaā€™s 2023 grass run lead-up to Wimbledon ended on a drastic note on Wednesday. An injury forced the Brazilian to stop her second-round match against Petra Martic mid-way. The Croatian was leading 6-4, 3-2 at the time of Haddad Maiaā€™s quitting the match.

Martic will now play Madison Keys next.

Meanwhile, Keysā€™ fellow Americans, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegulaā€™s grass season extended into the quarter-finals of the Rothesay International. The fifth-seeded Gauff defeated Jodie Burrage 6-1, 6-1 in the round-of-16. The third-seeded Pegula won against Camila Osorio 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The two, who are also doubles partners, will now take on each other for a spot in the semi-finals.
