Holger Rune responds to accusations that he faked injury in stunning Munich final win

Holger Rune is strongly denying that he faked an injury during a stunning Munich final comeback against Botic van de Zandschulp.

In the Munich final, No 1 seed Rune saved four championship points in a 6-4 1-6 7-6 (3) win over fourth-seeded van de Zandschulp.

Late in the third set, Rune appeared to be dealing with an upper right arm issue.

Then, Rune also twisted his ankle in the 10th game of the third set.

“Rune is such a con artist on court with makeshift injuries playing Munich final. Was being out played, like the baby he is and pretend injury to put off opponent he is such a child no problem running full speed to the net,” one person tweeted.

Rune responded: “I played more than 10 matches the past 2 weeks. My body is done right now but still I wanted to fight til the end . Itā€™s a final. I donā€™t quit.”

Rune responds to another accusation

Another person tweeted: “Ugly Rune what a faker. This kind of unsportsmanlike conduct should not be rewarded.”

Rune replied: “Be nice. (I) played 10 matches. My body was so sore. Did not want to withdraw in the final.”

Van de Zandschulp was up by two breaks – had a 5-2 lead in the third set – and two consecutive championship points on his serve.

Rune stunningly managed to get both breaks back, before van de Zandschulp claimed another break in the 11th game for a 6-5 lead.

Serving for the match for the third time, van de Zandschulp again failed to close out the match after missing out on two more championship points.

Rune then dominated the third-set tie-break to complete a stunning three-set win.

“I was feeling really exhausted but I was fighting until the end and I tried everything I could to come back into the match. I think for the crowd it was the perfect final. We really pushed each other to the limit and I am super happy I defended the title today,” Rune said after the final.
