Madrid: Eugenie Bouchard overcomes No. 13 seed to reach qualifying final round

Former world No 5 Eugenie Bouchard has been through to the Madrid Open qualifying final round following a Sara Sorribes Tormo retirement.

On Monday, Bouchard – now ranked at No 285 in the world – had a comfortable 6-1 4-1 lead when 13th-seeded Sorribes Tormo retired their qualifying match.

Down 3-0 in the second set, Sorribes Tormo received a medical timeout.

Two games later, Sorribes Tormo retired the match.

Sorribes Tormo appeared to be dealing with a sickness.

Bouchard was heading toward a dominant win over Sorribes Tormo

Bouchard faced pressure in the very first game of the match as Sorribes Tormo had three break points.

However, Bouchard was able to save all three points and avoid going down by an early break.

After saving three break points, Bouchard earned the first break of the match in the second game.

Bouchard, who was up by 3-0 after the first three games, also had a break point in the fourth game which could have given her a double-break lead.

But Sorribes Tormo saved that break point to finally get on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1.

Bouchard maybe didn’t get her second break in the fourth game but she managed to do so in the sixth game for a 5-1 lead.

In the seventh game, Bouchard converted her second set point to seal the first set.

After winning the first set, Bouchard also broke Sorribes Tormo in the first game of the second set.

In the second game, Bouchard saved two break points to open a 2-0 lead.

Then, Bouchard earned her second break of the set in the third game to take a 3-0 lead and go up by a double-break.

Bouchard served out the fourth game to open a 4-0 lead, before Sorribes Tormo served out the fifth game to get on the board in the second set.

Sorribes Tormo retired the match midway through the sixth game on Bouchard’s serve.

Bouchard plays next against Elizabeth Mandlik.
