Day 2 of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2023 brought some unexpected and thrilling results. Swiss tennis player, Stan Wawrinka, amazed the crowd with his comeback victory over Dutch Griekspoor in three sets, with a final score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Despite a tough fight from Griekspoor, Wawrinka’s skill and determination ultimately prevailed, securing his place in the next round.
In another standout match, US Open champion Dominic Thiem put in a dominating performance against Richard Gasquet, winning 6-1, 6-4. Thiem’s backhand and forehand shots were a sight to behold, and Gasquet could not keep up. Thiem’s victory puts him through to the next round of the ATP Masters 1000.
Not all the Grand Slam champions had a successful day, with Andy Murray suffering a tough loss to Alex De Minaur in his first Monte-Carlo tournament appearance in five years. The Australian dominated the match, winning 6-1, 6-3.
However, Diego Schwartzman secured a comfortable win over David Goffin, winning 6-4, 6-2, and setting up an exciting second-round match against Jannik Sinner.
There were also impressive performances from underdogs like Francisco Cerundolo, who defeated the number 11 seed Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4, and wildcard Jack Draper, who beat Sebastian Baez 6-3, 7-5. Qualified Gakhov advanced to the second round after defeating McDonald in three sets (7-6, 2-6, 6-3) and will face off against Novak Djokovic in the next round.
