Third seed Veronika Kudermetova advanced to the quarter-finals of the Istanbul Open on Thursday after receiving a walkover from Ana Bogdan. The Romanian decided to not play in her match after injuring her right foot.
Later, in a post shared on social media, Bogdan said that she felt pain in the same place where she’d previously sustained a stress fracture and during her warm-up, wasn’t able to move all too well. She added that her decision to not continue in Istanbul was taken in light to check whether it was a stress fracture again or a minor aggravation and that she was focused on playing in the French Open, beginning in May. She also mentioned that she would be undergoing an MRI to find out further about her injury.
Meanwhile, Kudermetova will take on Anna Bondar next.
Istanbul Open: Ajla Tomljanovic secures a QF berth
Sixth seed Ajla Tomljanovic reached the quarter-finals after her opponent, Lesia Tsurenko retired partway through their second-round match. The Australian was leading 6-4, 1-0 at the time of the Ukrainian’s retirement.
Tomljanovic will play Yulia Putintseva for a chance to reach the semi-finals. Putintseva defeated Rebecca Peterson 6-2, 6-0 in their round-of-16 match in an hour and 14 minutes. The Kazakh won 67% and 60% points off her first serves and second serves respectively. In comparison, Peterson managed to win merely 32% points on her first serve and 27% points on her second serve. Both games that Peterson won in the match came courtesy of service breaks while she conceded her serve seven times across the match.
Anastasia Potapova wrapped up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Petra Martic in their second-round clash in 70 minutes. Potapova saved all five break points she faced while converting three of the four break points she had on the Croat’s serve. In the quarters of the Istanbul Open, Potapova will take on Sara Sorribes Tormo. The seventh seed notched a win over 6-2, 6-1 win over Varvara Gracheva in 72 minutes.
