Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all those who joined hands to raise a whopping $100,000 for Ukraine relief. The Tennis Plays for Peace Pro-Am event, organized by Charleston Open and WTA Charities, brought together WTA stars Sloane Stephens, Shelby Rogers, and Anhelina Kalinina, alongside 24 local Charleston tennis enthusiasts.
The event successfully raised the funds, which will now be channeled through the Elina Svitolina Foundation for Ukraine’s benefit. Svitolina, who recently made a comeback after giving birth in October, was delighted to be back on the court, especially for such a noble cause. Speaking about the event, she said, “It’s really important to continue helping Ukrainian people. This is really special that we can help in many different ways.”
The Charleston organizers were equally thrilled to support Ukraine in every possible way. The tournament director, Bob Moran, said, “Increasing awareness and raising funds for Ukraine is very important to us as a tournament and to our players. We are passionate about working with Elina, who has a deep and personal understanding of the needs in her home country right now.”
Svitolina, who has been actively raising awareness and funds for her country since the start of the Russian invasion on Ukraine, emphasized the importance of continuing the aid to her nation. “For sure, it’s different now. But in so many ways, it’s amazing. I love being here in Charleston. I feel ready. It’s going to be a long way to be back where I have been, but I am excited for the challenge,” she added.
Overall, the event was a resounding success, both in terms of raising funds for a noble cause and bringing people together for a game of tennis.
