Former world No 2 Alexander Zverev feels his game is improving and he believes he could have reached the Indian Wells Masters had he won a thriller against Daniil Medvedev.
Last week, Zverev won his opening two matches in Indian Wells before Medvedev outlasted him 6-7 (5) 7-6 (5) 7-5 in the round-of-16.
Zverev, who missed the entire second half of the 2022 season due to injuries, thinks Indian Wells was a step in the positive direction for him.
“I feel that little by little I am recovering my level of tennis, which is super important for me, I was very close to beating Daniil Medvedev a few days ago in Indian Wells. You never know, maybe winning that match would have made me go one step further and get to the final, fighting for a big title. Everything was decided in a couple of points, but I am left with the fact that I am finally feeling competitive again on the court, that is the best news for me, to be 100% physically fit again,” Zverev said, per Punto de Break.
Zverev on competing at the Miami Masters
Now, Zverev is set to compete in Miami, where he has a home and loves to spend his time.
Zverev, seeded at No 13, had a first-round bye in Miami and he plays Taro Daniel in the second round.
“I love Miami, it’s probably my favorite place in all of the United States, it makes me so happy every time I get to go back,” Zverev said.
In the past, Zverev had some notable results in Miami.
In 2017, Zverev made his first big Miami result as he reached the quarterfinal that year.
The following year, Zverev enjoyed an even better Miami run as he made the final before losing to John Isner in three sets.
After picking up Miami second-round exits in 2019 and 2021, Zverev made the Miami quarterfinal last year.
It remains to be seen how well can Zverev do in Miami this year.
