Australian tennis player Jordan Thompson recently pulled off a stunning upset by defeating Greek superstar Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open 2023 at Indian Wells.
Thompson, ranked at No. 87 in the world, managed to go toe-to-toe with the second-seeded Tsitsipas and emerged victorious in a hard-fought battle that went all the way to a third-set tiebreaker.
After the match, Thompson revealed that he had enjoyed the challenge of facing a top player like Tsitsipas and that he had even laughed when the Greek tried to draw the crowd into the match. He explained that being in such situations was what he craved and relished as a professional tennis player, and that it was better to be that way than not.
This was not the first time Thompson had caused a major upset in a high-profile match. In 2017, he had defeated former world No. 1 Andy Murray at the Queen’s Club to record his first ever top-10 win. Six years later, he repeated the feat by beating world No. 3 Tsitsipas. Thompson credited his recent run of good form and his own confidence for his victory over the Greek star.
Thompson also spoke about the pride he feels in representing Australia and his commitment to always give his best effort on the court. He explained that it was in his blood as an Australian to go all-out in competition and to do his best to make his country proud. Despite occasionally getting angry and frustrated during matches, Thompson promised that it would never stop him from always competing at 100%.
