Lorenzo Musetti opens on seeking professional help for mental health

World No. 83 Lorenzo Musetti revealed he talks to a therapist weekly and admitted his mental health has improved since he has started to work with a professional.Ā 

“In my difficult months, I started a path with a psychologist. I found myself well and still I talk with him weekly, at the end of each tournament. I didnā€™t believe it before, but it helped me get through the difficulties, on and off the court,” Musetti said, per Mario Boccardi.

Musetti, 20, enjoyed a breakout season in 2021 and he was just a set away from stunning world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the French Open.Ā 

Musetti is one of the most promising players on the ATP Tour and he is hoping to get himself a solid fanbase.Ā 

“In addition to money and fame, we play to have fans, especially children in which I recognize a lot, those who believe in a dream and then, cultivating it, they reach it. You always start from a dream,” Musetti added.Ā 

Musetti beat Benoit Paire in Monte Carlo

On Tuesday, Musetti overcame Paire 6-2 6-7 (4) 6-2 in the Monte Carlo second round.Ā 

After picking up his eighth consecutive defeat on the ATP Tour, Paire opened on his recent mental struggles.Ā 

Paire needed eight set points to win the second set and he collapsed in the third set.Ā 

Just when it seemed the momentum was on Paire’s side, he shut down.Ā 

“No, I have no word for it. I just see what needs to happen for me to win a set point.Ā  I need the opponent to make a mistake, otherwise I can’t win. All those latest matches I played I was up and almost going to win them and I ended up losing them,” Paire said.

When asked about the prospect of working with a therapist, Paire said no.

“I don’t want to go and see a pychologist. I’m not interested. It’s going to come back,” Paire said.
