Jessica Pegula says she and Cori Gauff are honored to be in the position to represent the United States at the upcoming WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas.
This past week, Pegula and Gauff made it all the way at the San Diego Open.
Following their strong run in San Diego, Pegula and Gauff became the fifth doubles team to qualify for the WTA Finals.
Pegula has also qualified for the WTA Finals in singles, while Gauff is also expected to qualify for the prestigious season-ending event.
“Itās a huge honour. When we did well earlier this year we were also doing well in singles. But we were like āwe want to make year-end Finals for doubles and singles as well.’ So I think for us to be able to play doubles is awesome,” Pegula said.
Pegula, Gauff set to represent the United States
For the first time since 2015, the United States will have an all-American doubles team at the WTA Finals.
āItās weird that itās been that long but weāre happy that weāre able to break that [drought] so hopefully we can do well,ā Pegula added.
Pegula, who started her season with back-to-back first round defeats, has been one of the most consistent players this season.
Now, Pegula says she is happy with the way she responded after a slow start to the season.
āThatās the great thing about it. You start the year and you have no idea how itās going to end up. I guess thatās the beauty of our sport. A lot of ups and downs and challenges along the way, but coming to the end of the year Iām feeling good. Iām happy with how Iāve faced all the challenges of the year, traveling, different surfaces, everything you could possibly imagine,” Pegula reflected.
It remains to be seen if Pegula and Gauff can win their fourth title of the year at the WTA Finals.
