Iga Swiatek made a return to the champion’s side as she claimed the San Diego Open on Sunday after defeating Donna Vekic in the final. The Pole took an hour and 47 minutes to wrap up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 victory.
Swiatek won 70% of her first-serve points and 82% of her second-serve points. She also won 61% of points on return on Vekic’s second serve. The Croatian finished the match by winning 67% of her first-serve points. Throughout the match, Swiatek’s serve came under trouble just once, in the second set. She faced just the one break point in the set and dropped her serve. She, however, converted four break points on Vekic’s serve. The world no. 1 finished the match with 77 points to Vekic’s 58.

Earlier on Saturday, Swiatek reached the final with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback win over fourth seed Jessica Pegula after two hours and six minutes of play. The other semi-final featuring Vekic and Danielle Collins had to be suspended in the deciding set with the American leading 4-2 in the final set. Vekic eventually prevailed in the rain-postponed semi-final on Sunday, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2) after three hours and a minute.
For Iga Swiatek, the San Diego Open title’s the eighth she’s won this year. She’s also now reached three back-to-back finals. This includes the US Open, the Ostrava Open and San Diego. In fact, Swiatek’s also reached nine finals this year. The only title she didn’t win was Ostrava. Czech player Barbora Krejcikova won the title at home upsetting Swiatek in three sets in the final. Overall, Swiatek’s lost only two WTA finals in her career. Swiatek lost the first WTA final she played, at the Lugano Open in 2019 to Polona Hercog. Since then she went on a 10-title winning streak that included three Majors before losing her only second final in Ostrava.
