Leylah Fernandez reveals her way of handling negative comments

Leylah Fernandez reveals she is trying to avoid reading articles about her as she feels that’s a good way of blocking out potentially negative comments.

Fernandez, who turned 20 this month, admitted that occasionally she notices something negative written or said about her.

When that happens, Fernandez tries to simply not give it any attention.

“We’ve actually had this one rule to never ever read an article about myself. Whatever comes out, it comes out. So, I try not to read about it and even if I do hear a negative comment, it goes from one ear and out the other. I don’t try to dwell on it too much,” Leylah Fernandez said on the WTA’s ‘The Real Me’ series, per Sportskeeda.

Fernandez on the doubts she faced

With her slim frame, Fernandez was once doubted and told she wouldn’t make it in tennis.

Now, Fernandez is a Grand Slam finalist and one of the most promising and talented players in the game.

Fernandez has proved over the last year that she definitely has the game to compete against the best players in the world.

“I think the biggest one was ‘I’m too short, I’m not fast enough, not strong enough, not powerful enough, and that my tennis game, my style of game will not work against bigger players. So those comments that were very repetitive over the course of the year, people would say that I would not be able to achieve my goals because I was too small and that in the next level, it was not going to work. Just hearing that has always fueled me but not just me but also my family around me, like, whatever those people are saying, take it and we’re gonna prove them wrong,” Fernandez said.

Meanwhile, Fernandez hasn’t played since losing to in-form Liudmila Samsonova in the US Open second round.
