Roger Federer will play a last match in doubles with Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup 2022. During his last press conference, the Swiss Maestron confirmed that he will not be able to attend singles during the competition and that at least Saturday he will give way to Matteo Berrettini.
Friday night barring surprises, he should play his last career match alongside Rafa Nadal. However, that of the twenty-time Grand Slam champion was a long and decidedly intimate chat with the press.
One of the first thoughts was obviously dedicated by Peter Carter, who passed away prematurely in 2002. “I’m sorry I didn’t see me reach the top of the standings and reach some of my most important goals, but at the same time it was fundamental for my game, the my personality. He was not just an older brother, but a mentor and a great coach. If I played in a certain way in my career it was also thanks to him,” he explained with great frankness.
Roger Federer: “Mistakes made me grow”
Federer focused on the elements that made him most proud at the end of the journey and obviously some things he would change if he could come back.
“The thing I am most proud of is longevity. When I started I was famous for being very inconsistent. It was a shock to be one of the most enduring on the Tour. Staying at the top for so long was really fun, doing it for 15 years can also say a privilege,” he explained with great clarity.
“Obviously I have some regrets. But the mistakes and bad decisions made me grow up and I’m happy with how things turned out. I don’t think I’ll have any flashbacks about bad defeats in the future. There are some very difficult decisions to make even off the pitch, you shouldn’t always let my team decide so as not to blame them.”
