Stan Wawrinka: “Forever grateful to Roger Federer”

Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, two rivals and two teammates. Both of Swiss flag, the two players have been the protagonists of great battles on the tennis courts, with a clear winner: Federer has won 23 of the 26 head-to-head matches.

Only three times Wawrinka has managed to impose himself on his compatriot: twice on the fields of Monte Carlo, once at Roland Garros. In the case of the Monegasque city, the second victory succumbs to the first, since it was the final of the Masters 1000, won by the second Swiss in the ranking; in Paris, on the other hand, it was a quarter-final and the success of the Lausanne player led him to win the Grand Slam title.

More than the clashes on the court as opponents, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka are remembered for the successes they achieved together. Winners of the gold medal in the men’s doubles at the 2008 Olympics, they also led Switzerland to conquer the Davis Cup in 2014, beating the French national team in the final at their home in Lille.

For Roger Federer’s farewell to tennis, it was precisely these moments that Wawrinka wanted to remember to pay homage to the career of the most successful of the two Swiss.

Stan Wawrinka: “Forever grateful to Roger Federer”

Wawrinka’s first message, like Alcaraz, was limited to a great reaction, using simple emoticons on Twitter: sad faces, hearts and Goat symbols.

Only later did he dedicate himself to writing a short thought about Federer’s retirement, talking above all about his team-mates experience: “Thank you my friend for everything you have done for me over the years. It was a true honor to share the court against you but it was even more special to be in the same team as you. Forever grateful for all the memories on and off the court. Tennis will never be the same without you. Enjoy the next chapter in your life with your beautiful family.”

this is the message that the youngest of the Swiss sent to his old teammate.
