Andy Murray said he was unaware of Roger Federer’s plans to stop his career when he signed up to compete at the Laver Cup.
In late June, the Laver Cup announced Murray signed up to compete at this year’s event edition.
On Thursday, Federer revealed his pllans to retire from professional tennis after the Laver Cup.
Murray, who clashed Federer numerous times on the big stage, will now be a part of Federer’s Last Dance.
“Yeah, look, I didn’t know that he was going to be stopping. I don’t know, I think people were maybe expecting that to happen at some stage in the not too distant future. I didn’t know that when I signed up to play,” Murray said, per Sportskeeda.
Murray looking forward to seeing Federer, Rafael Nadal & Novak Djokovic
The Big Four – Murray, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic – are all set to compete at the Laver Cup.
For a decade, the Big Four were regularly competing against each in the latter stages of Grand Slams and Masters events.
Unfortunately, due to injuries, there haven’t been that many clashes between the Big Four in recent years.
“Yeah, the opportunity to play with those guys, now for the last time, yeah, all being in the same event together, it’s not happened that much in the last few years. But yeah, to be on the same team, be with them for one last time, it will be really special,” Murray said. “I hope that Roger’s able to play because, I mean, he always got amazing support at the O2. But, yeah, I think the atmosphere will be incredible. It’s the end of, yeah, something pretty special. I’ll try my best to enjoy it.”
Since the Big Four are all set to represent Team Europe, they can’t clash against each other.
But they will certainly do their best to help Team Europe win and help Federer go out as a winner for one final time.
