David Goffin comments on winning Marrakech after poor start to 2022

Former world No. 7 David Goffin admitted that winning Marrakech gives him a lot of happiness and confidence as he is hoping this is just the start of his good results.Ā

After a slow start to the season, marked with early exits, Goffin found his game in Marrakech as he defeated Alex Molcan in the final 3-6 6-3 6-3 to win his first title of the year and overall sixth career title.Ā

Prior to Marrakech, Goffin was 6-9 on the Tour level.Ā

Goffin hit a rough stretch two months ago as he was on a four-match losing streak before winning a Davis Cup match in early March.Ā

ā€œIā€™m very happy, proud of my week. It was not easy, a lot of tough matches,ā€ Goffin said, per the ATP Tour website. ā€œBut at the end, I have my sixth title, here in Marrakech. It gives me a lot of happiness and confidence for the season on the clay.ā€

Goffin clinched three comeback wins

In five matches played in Marrakech, Goffin three times had to come back from a set down.Ā

Previously, Goffin needed three sets to beat Pablo Andujar in the round-of-16 and Roberto Carballes Baena in the quarterfinal, respectively.Ā

ā€œIt was the case twice before that match that I lost the first set and I always stayed calm the whole week to turn it around. It was the case again today, because he was playing well. He was better than me in the first set, and then I managed to play better and better, serving better, being more aggressive in the middle of the second,ā€ Goffin said. ā€œI was the better player [after that]. I was playing even better in the third set, so Iā€™m really happy the way I finished with another break [and] a good match point. I didnā€™t want to serve for the match, I preferred to finish with a break.”

Even though Molcan fell just short of winning his maiden ATP title, he was in good spirits afterward.

ā€œIā€™m really grateful for it. You helped me to win many matches this week, so thanks again,ā€ Molcan said. ā€œHopefully I will come here next year and you will cheer for me as well.ā€
