Roger Federer returned after a six-month break and won the Australian Open 2017, the first Slam of the season, beating his great rival, Rafael Nadal, after five intense and spectacular sets closed with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6 -1, 3-6, 6-3.
In Melbourne the Swiss had not triumphed since 2010 and this victory was the 18th in a Grand Slam. The last victory he had obtained at Wimbledon in 2012. Federer and Nadal returned to compete in a Grand Slam final for the ninth time, but the first in five and a half years.
At the end of 2016, the Swiss had slipped out of the top 10 for the first time in 14 years. Thanks to the Australian triumph he moved up to tenth position.
Many social reactions to Roger’s farewell, many wanted to greet the one who was the darling of all tennis fans. One of the most beautiful messages arrived is undoubtedly that of Rafael Nadal, a great rival but above all a great friend of the Swiss champion:
“It’s a sad day for me personally and for people around the world who love sports. We will still have many moments to share to share together in the future, but there are still many things to do together, we know. For now, I would sincerely wish you the best with your wife Mirka, your children, your family and enjoy for what the future will give you. We will see you in London for the Laver Cu!”
