Belinda Bencic ousted second seed Paula Badosa in the quarter-final of the Charleston Open on Friday. The Swiss, seeded 10th this week, came from a set down to win 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 in two hours and 47 minutes.
Bencic won 69% of her first-serve points to Badosa’s 62% and 50% of her second-serve points to the Spaniard’s 54%. She saved 10 of the 14 break points she faced while converting three of the 10 break points she had, to ensure a narrow win for herself. This was the first time Bencic had defeated Badosa as going into the match, it was the latter who’d boasted of a 3-0 win-to-loss record against her. The Bencic-Badosa match was also the only match to have gone the distance.
Charleston Open: Ons Jabeur advances without problems
In the semi-finals, Bencic will play Ekaterina Alexandrova. Alexandrova defeated Magda Linette, 6-0, 6-2 in 62 minutes. Alexandrova put in only 49% of her first-serves to Linette’s 57% but won 86% of her first-serve points to the Pole’s 41%. She saved two of the three break points she faced while breaking Linette’s serve six times.
In the top half of the draw, fourth seed Ons Jabeur wrapped up her quarter-final against Anhelina Kalinina in 63 minutes, 6-3, 6-2. Jabeur only won 33% of her second-serve points to the Ukrainian’s 50% but won 80% of her first-serve points to Kalinina’s 53%. The Tunisian, who’s the highest seed left in the draw, saved one of the two break points she faced while converting four of the eight break points she had on Kalinina’s serve.
Amanda Anisimova will be Jabeur’s opponent in the semis of the Charleston Open. The American, seeded 15th, beat fellow countrywoman, Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 in 64 minutes. Anisimova saved all five break points she faced while breaking her opponent’s serve four times. Â
