World No. 1 Iga Swiatek reveals she is trying to take a long-term approach to her process and focus on being where she wants to be in 2023.
After winning 37 consecutive matches and lifting titles at six tournaments in a row, Swiatek hasn’t won a title in her last three tournaments.
Following a surprise Wimbledon third round defeat, Swiatek was beaten in the Warsaw quarterfinal and also suffered a shock loss to Beatriz Haddad Maia in the Toronto last-16.
But Swiatek doesn’t sound particularly concerned heading into the US Open.
“I’m trying to look long term at whole process and maybe think [where I want to be] in the next season,” Swiatek said, per the WTA website. “It’s more my team who is kind of like convincing me that I should think long term.”
Swiatek on learning to play in windy conditions
The playing conditions versus Haddad Maia were extremely difficult to handle and Swiatek ended up suffering a shock defeat.
After the match, Swiatek admitted she was impacted by the tricky conditions.
“Especially, this was the first day that it was so windy,” Swiatek said. “So I didn’t even know that it’s going to be like that. And it was hard to even prepare, you know? When she was playing with the wind, she was playing really strong balls. And sometimes I was late for them. And on the other hand she was able to put it in.”
After the loss, Swiatek tried to draw positives.
Swiatek maybe lost to Haddad Maia but certainly learned a thing or two about playing in windy conditions.
Now, Swiatek is hoping to bounce back at this week’s WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati.
Swiatek, the top-seeded player, had a first round bye in Cincinnati.
Swiatek plays Sloane Stephens in the Cincinnati second round.
Swiatek has never made it past the Cincinnati second round in her first three appearances.
