Andy Murray says some of his best tennis moments have come during the Davis Cup and he is excited to be making his return to the competition this September.
On Monday, British Davis Cup captain Leon Smith announced Murray, Cameron Norrie, Daniel Evans and Joe Salisbury as the players who are set to represent Great Britain at the Davis Cup Finals.
Murray, who led Great Britain to the Davis Cup title in 79 years in 2015, is set to play in the event for the first time since 2019.
“It’s always special playing in a Davis Cup tie in front of a home crowd. Some of the best moments of my career have come representing my country in the Davis Cup, so to be a part of the team again means a lot,” Murray said, per Tennis365. “Obviously it’s exciting that the competition is returning to Glasgow, we’ve had some brilliant results there in the past, and this is another chance for us to create even more history. We’ve got a strong team and we’ll be giving everything we can to get the win for the fans and book our place in the finals.”
Murray returns to British team
After being out of Davis Cup action for three years, Murray is set to represent Great Britain once again.
In Group D in Glasgow, Great Britain will take on the United States, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands.
But one different compared to previous years is that Murray isn’t anymore Great Britain’s top-ranked male player.
Now it is 11th-ranked Cameron Norrie.
“Coming into a Davis Cup as the British No 1 – it doesn’t get much better than that,” Norrie said. “Having Andy in the team of course is a real boost. Both him and Dan were here in 2015 when we went on to win the competition and having that experience is really important, but it also drives the rest of us to get there as well.”
