Serena Williams came back to win a match, just before she revealed she will retire after the US Open 2022. After the defeat in the first round of Wimbledon, Toronto was the stage chosen by the American tennis player to regain a victory that had been missing for 430 days, from last year’s edition of the third Grand Slam of the season.

Less than a day after her success, the announcement of her retirement arrives. In an interview released exclusively to Vogue, Serena Williams explained that she will bid farewell to tennis after the US Open, the Grand Slam tournament held at her home in the United States of America.

The reasons behind the choice to retire, explained both in the interview with Vogue and in the social post she published herself on Instagram, are to focus on a new future and on the family: on the little girl who was four years old, Alexis, and on a possible expansion of the family unit in the future.

Although the news of the retirement is what has caught her attention the most, Serena Williams continues to demonstrate her dominance in the WTA Tour by setting a new record.

The number of victories in Toronto

Serena Williams, during her on-court interview after the first round match, explained: “It’s great to be back in Toronto, I didn’t know if I would be able to play here again. Being one of my favorite stops on the Tour, I was really happy to be back here. Thank you all. I love you.”

With the victory against Parrizas-Diaz, she has reached 35 victories in Canada: overcoming Chris Evert, she stops at 34 victories on this field. Rounding out the top 5 of the tennis players with the most wins are Arantxa Sanchez (32), Monica Seles (31) and Helena Sukova (28).

In the second round in Toronto, The Queen can still further detach her countrywoman and former world number, climbing to 36 victories on Canadian hardcourt. Now for Serena the last stage of her amazing career.
