Alex de Minaur shares thoughts on beating Jenson Brooksby for Atlanta title

Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur took a moment to thank the Atlanta crowd after beating USA’s Jenson Brooksby in the final, saying they were amazing throughout the entire week.

In the Atlanta final, de Minaur saw off home favorite Brooksby 6-3 6-3 to win his first title of the year.

De Minaur, 23, was playing in Atlanta for the third time.

De Minaur clinched his first Atlanta title in 2019 and now he is a two-time champion at the tournament.

“I’d like to thank the crowd,” de Minaur said on-court after winning the title, per the ATP website. “You guys were amazing. I’m not a local, but you guys sure made me feel like one, so really appreciate the support.”

“It was great to get another title under my name. It’s my sixth title. It feels good. Not a lot of people have been able to do that, so I feel great,” de Minaur said. “I feel great about my game. I’ve put a lot of work in, so it’s great to see the hard work being rewarded.”

De Minaur claimed the first break of the match in the sixth game and then held on to his serve the rest of the set to win the opener.

In the second set, de Minaur blew an early second set break but broke Brooksby again in the seventh and ninth games to complete a two-set win.

“I knew coming in it [would be] a very tactical, chess-like match that we were going to both play. I feel like we are both tricky players in that sense and we adapt very well, so [there were] a lot of tactics going both ways and I’m happy I was able to execute my game plan and get the win today,” de Minaur said.

De Minaur, the 11th seed in Washington, has a first round bye at the tournament he starts his tournament by playing the winner of the match between Brooksby and Yoshihito Nishioka.
