Dominic Thiem offers assessment of his week in Bastad

Dominic Thiem said he was happy with his week in Bastad and now he is hoping to make a good run in Gstaad.

In Bastad, Thiem finally clinched his first ATP win of the year after beating Emil Ruusuvuori 3-6 6-1 7-6 (5).

After beating Ruusuvuori, Thiem earned another notable win as he defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 (5) 3-6 6-4.

In the quarterfinal, Thiem competed well, but Argentine Sebastian Baez escaped with a 6-2 6-7 (5) 6-4 win.

Prior to Bastad, Thiem was just 0-6 on the main level in 2022.

“Overall Iā€™m happy with my performance this week! Really enjoyed competing here in beautiful Bastad,” Thiem wrote on Instagram.

Thiem clinched his first ATP win in 14 months

Thiem sustained a wrist injury at the Mallorca Open in 2021 June.

After being out for 10 months, Thiem made his return in late March.

Thiem was visibly far from his best level in his first couple of matches and it resulted in him losing his first six ATP matches of the year.

After beating Ruusuvuori, Thiem’s confidence levels increased.

“It is a process. I beat [Emil] Ruusuvuori and today I beat Bautista Agut,” Thiem said after beating Bautista Agut. “Two really top opponents, so if I can beat them I am definitely back, I am into the quarters of a really strong tournament, so I am happy. It is a process, but I am going the right way. The win against Emil gave me confidence that I can compete against the best players in the world and today against Roberto. He is always such a tough opponent. I was expecting and hoping it would be a close match. Then when I won the first set in the tie-break I said ā€˜Hey, I can win today.ā€™ I had the belief until the end of the match and the third set was really good.ā€

Now, Thiem is set for Gstaad.

In the Gstaad first round, Thiem faces Hugo Gaston.
