Third seed Irina-Camelia Begu was ousted in the second round of the Ladies Open Lausanne on Wednesday. Anastasia Potapova defeated the Romanian 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 39 minutes.
Potapova won 65% of her first-serve points to Begu’s 54%. The world no. 79 was also particularly effective when it came to saving break points. Potapova faced 14 break points but conceded her serve just once throughout the match. On the other hand, Begu faced five break points but lost her serve on four occasions.
In the quarter-finals, Potapova now awaits a German in either Wimbledon quarter-finalist, Jule Niemeier or qualifier, Eva Lys.
Speaking of Wimbledon and Germans, Tatjana Maria who reached the penultimate round at the 2022 Championships pulled out of her first-round match against Leolia Jeanjean of France. Since there were no lucky losers in the draw, the French qualifier received a walkover into the second round where she’ll play sixth seed and fellow countrywoman, Caroline Garcia.
Ladies Open Lausanne: Simona Waltert’s unstoppable
Swiss Simona Waltert continued her upbeat form at her home event as she backed her first-round win over top-seeded Danielle Collins by winning her second-round match and reaching the quarter-finals. Waltert beat qualifier Cristina Bucsa of Spain, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and six minutes.
Walter won nine breaks of serve on Bucsa’s serve and conceded her serve seven times in the match. She won a slightly higher margin of first-serve points as compared to her opponent – 57% to the latter’s 55%.
Looking to reach the semi-finals, Waltert will next play either Olga Danilovic or Anna Kalinskaya.
Petra Martic also reached the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Erika Andreeva. The Croatian will take on a Swiss in either Susan Bandecchi or second seed, Belinda Bencic.
Lastly, fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo also advanced to the quarters of the Ladies Open Lausanne. The Spaniard won against France’s Clara Burel, 6-4, 6-2 in 90 minutes. Garcia or Jeanjean will be Sorribes Tormo’s next opponent.
