Ladies Open Lausanne: Danielle Collins upset in 1R; Belinda Bencic escapes same fate

Simona Waltert posted the biggest shock of the Ladies Open Lausanne on Tuesday as she took out the world no. 7 and the tournament top seed Danielle Collins in the first round. The Swiss wildcard needed a little over three hours to post a comeback win, 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(6).

The world no. 154 won 65% of her first-serve and 50% of her second-serve points as compared to the American winning 60% and 47% of her first and second-serve points respectively. Waltert also saved 14 of the 19 break points she faced while converting six break points on Collins’ serve. This is the Swiss’ first win over a player ranked in the top 10 of the WTA rankings.

In the second round, Waltert will play Spanish qualifier, Cristina Bucsa. Bucsa ousted French wildcard, Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 7-6(3) in two hours.

Meanwhile, Waltert’s compatriot, the second-seeded Belinda Bencic came from a set down in her opening-round clash against Mladenovic’s fellow countrywoman, Diane Parry. Bencic won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 18 minutes.

Ladies Open Lausanne: A couple of seeded players exit 

The 2020 Tokyo Games’ gold medallist won 72% of her first-serve points and converted six of the 19 break points that came her way on Parry’s serve. She also saved six of the 10 break points she faced.

In the second round, Bencic will play Susan Bandecchi.

Third seed Irina-Camelia Begu got past Tamara Korpatsch 6-4, 6-2 to reach the second round. The Romanian will take on Anastasia Potapova next.

France’s Caroline Garcia, seeded sixth in the draw beat Jasmine Paolini in their first-round encounter. Garcia won 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 17 minutes and could play either fellow Frenchwoman, qualifier Leolia Jeanjean or Tatjana Maria next.

Olga Danilovic reached the round-of-16 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Misaki Doi and will play Anna Kalinskaya for a chance to reach the quarter-finals.

Lastly, fifth seed Nuria Parrizas Diaz and eighth seed Varvara Gracheva lost their respective openers at the Ladies Open Lausanne. Petra Martic beat the Spaniard 6-3, 6-2 while German qualifier, Eva Lys stunned Gracheva, 7-5, 6-4. Martic will play Erika Andreeva who won against Anna Blinkova, 6-1, 6-2. Lys, meanwhile, will take on fellow German, Jule Niemeier.
