Amanda Anisimova, 20, couldn’t hide her happiness after reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinal as she admitted she didn’t expect to make a deep run at The All England Club.
On Monday, Anisimova saw off Harmony Tan 6-2 6-3 to reach her first Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Anisimova was pretty dominant throughout the entire match as she realited 4-of-11 of her break point chances and saved all of the two break points she faced.
“Going into this I didn’t think this was possible,” Anisimova said, per the WTA website. “It’s a dream come true right now.”
In 2019, a 17-year-old Anisimova reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the French Open.
“I think when I was 17, I didn’t really appreciate getting to the semifinals as much as I probably should. It only soaked in I think like a year later, understanding what that was, how much it actually meant to me.”
Anisimova on playing Simona Halep next
The week before Wimbledon, Halep crushed Anisimova 6-2 6-1 in Bad Homburg.
Anisimova says she expects a tough match but adds she will put up a big fight and do her best to beat Halep.
“I just played her last week,” Anisimova noted. “She’s really tough to play on grass, for sure. Last week she was playing very well. It was a tough match for me. I kind of felt my wrist a bit in that match so I wasn’t really playing to the full of my abilities. I know this will be a really tough match coming up, but I’m looking forward to it. I’m sure we’ll both put up a really good fight.”
Halep dominated Anisimova just over a week ago and she is the favorite to beat the American again.
Halep and Anisimova will be going head-to-head for the third time in their respective careers when they meet in the Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Anisimova won the first meeting versus Halep but the Romanian has won their last two meetings.
It remains to be seen if Anisimova can upset Halep and reach her maiden Wimbledon semifinal.
