Paula Badosa, the top seed at the Rothesay International in Eastbourne had a short-lived campaign in the tournament. Jodie Burrage ousted the world no. 3 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 13 minutes in the round-of-32 on Tuesday.
Burrage won 80% of her first-serve points to Badosa’s 57% and 47% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 58%. Burrage faced only three break points of which she saved two but went on to convert four break points on Badosa’s serve.
In the third round, Burrage will play 15th seed, Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Brazilian outlasted Kaia Kanepi 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 22 minutes.
Rothesay International: Britons and Ukrainians’ dictate results’ way
There were several other upsets as well on Tuesday.
Burrage’s fellow Briton, Katie Boulter defeated fourth seed Karolina Pliskova in their second-round match. Pliskova won the opening set on a dominant note but Boulter bounced back strongly to overturn the momentum of the match and clinch the win, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 59 minutes. In the third round, Boulter will play 14th seed Petra Kvitova. The Czech won against Donna Vekic 6-1, 7-6(1) in an hour and 12 minutes.
Third seed Maria Sakkari also succumbed in the second round after winning the first set against Anhelina Kalinina. The Ukrainian needed two hours and eight minutes to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. In the third round, Kalinina will face 16th seed Yulia Putintseva.
Barbora Krejcikova, the seventh seed whose second-round match against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk was postponed to Wednesday in the middle of proceedings, also crashed out in a similar fashion to her compatriot Pliskova, and Sakkari. Kostyuk won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 29 minutes. She now awaits either 10th seed Jil Teichmann or Harriet Dart whose match was suspended right before the start of play in the third set on Wednesday.
Another Ukrainian, Lesia Tsurenko also posted an upset of her own, against the ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina. Tsurenko also lost the opening set but posted a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win in two hours and 13 minutes. Tsurenko will play Magda Linette next.
Jelena Ostapenko, the eighth seed and the defending titlist this week was among those who reached the third round. Ostapenko won against Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 17 minutes. She will next play 11th seed Madison Keys. The American won a second-round derby against Lauren Davis, 6-4, 6-3.
Camila Giorgi, the 12th seed defeated Rebecca Marino 7-5, 6-4 in their round-of-32 match in an hour and 40 minutes. The Italian will face fifth seed Garbine Muguruza for a place in the quarter-finals.
Lastly, Kirsten Flipkens and Viktoriya Tomova will play each other for a chance to reach the quarters of the Rothesay International. Flipkens ousted fellow Belgian and the 13th seed, Elise Mertens, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in their second-round match. Tomova, a lucky loser into the main draw came through to the third round with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Shelby Rogers.
