German tennis star Alexander Zverev has underlined that he will be gunning for the US Open title if he does decide to compete at Flushing Meadows.
Zverev, 25, tore several ligaments in his ankle during his French Open semifinal versus Rafael Nadal.
In the second set of his French Open semifinal, Zverev badly rolled his ankle and started crying in pain.
Zverev retired the match and underwent a surgery a few days later.
Now, Zverev is set to miss Wimbledon but he is hopeful of being ready for the US Open.
“I won’t be someone who plays after being ready for it for one second. If I play the US Open then to win them and not for one or two rounds,” Zverev told Bild am Sonntag. “I will only return if I have this form. I don’t know whether it will be the US Open because I would have to play one or two tournaments beforehand. But I haven’t written off New York.”

“There are specialists there who make sure that I can play again as soon as possible,” Zverev added.
Zverev was hoping to win his maiden Grand Slam title at this past French Open but unfortunately his campaign at Roland Garros came to an end on a very disappointing and unfortunate way.
However, Zverev has to move on from what happened at the French Open and focus on putting himself in a position to be a contender in the next couple of Grand Slam events.
At the US Open last year, Zverev reached the semifinal before losing to Novak Djokovic.
The US Open has been traditionally good place for Zverev, who reached his maiden and lone Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows in 2020.
Back then, Zverev blew a two-set lead in the US Open final versus Dominic Thiem.
It remains to be seen if Zverev will be ready for the US Open, which kicks off on August 29.
