Dayana Yastremska ousted the top-seeded Jelena Ostapenko in the second round of the Birmingham Classic on Thursday. The Ukrainian came from a set down to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and 15 minutes.
Yastremska hit 14 aces across the match and won 78% of her first-serve points. In comparison, the Latvian hit three aces and won 76% of her first-serve points. In terms of second-serve points won, while the Ukrainian won 42%, Ostapenko won 51%. Likewise, while Yastremska won five break points on Ostapenko’s serve she also saved five of the nine break points she faced.
Birmingham Classic: Lauren Davis no match for Camila Giorgi
In the quarter-finals, Yastremska will play eighth seed, Shuai Zhang. The Chinese also needed three sets to get past Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in an hour and 58 minutes.
Ruse hit 12 aces and had 17 double faults in the match to Zhang’s two aces and three double faults. Both players struggled to win points off their second serves – Zhang won 32% while Ruse won 29%. In terms of first-serve points won, Ruse won 80% to the latter’s 70%. The match also featured multiple break points – with Zhang saving five of the 10 break points she faced and converting six of the 10 break points she had on Ruse’s serve.
Third seed Camila Giorgi also posted a comeback win in her second-round match at the Birmingham Classic. The Italian defeated Lauren Davis 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in two hours and 24 minutes. Giorgi won 69% of her first-serve points to the American’s 66%. Giorgi also won 45% of her second-serve points to her opponent’s 46%. Giorgi faced 13 break points of which she saved nine while converting five of the nine break points on Davis’ serve. For the match, Giorgi finished with one point fewer than Davis – 96 to the latter’s 97.
