Ostapenko’s Dual Approach to Tennis

Jelena Ostapenko continues to shine in both singles and doubles, proving her versatility on the court. Currently ranked World No. 4 in doubles—higher than her singles ranking at No. 25—the 27-year-old Latvian remains focused on achieving more success in both formats.

Strong Start at Charleston Open

At the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open, Ostapenko kicked off her singles campaign with a solid 7-5, 6-2 victory over Louisa Chirico, advancing to the third round. This win broke her four-match singles losing streak, which dated back to her runner-up finish in Doha earlier this year.

Doubles Success Continues

Later that day, Ostapenko partnered with Erin Routliffe to secure a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Hao-Ching Chan, earning a spot in the doubles semifinals.

“Playing doubles is a great way to stay sharp. You can perform well in practice, but it’s different in real matches. I enjoy playing with strong partners,” Ostapenko said.

Looking Ahead to Roland Garros

Ostapenko has already made waves in doubles this season, reaching the Australian Open final with Su-Wei Hsieh before falling to Taylor Townsend and Katarina Siniakova. She plans to reunite with Hsieh for the upcoming clay-court events in Madrid and Rome before setting her sights on Roland Garros.

Facing Danielle Collins in Next Round

In her next singles match, Ostapenko will take on defending Charleston Open champion Danielle Collins. She acknowledges the challenge ahead, highlighting their similar playing styles.

“We’ve played a few times. She’s a great player and a strong personality. Our matches feature powerful rallies, so it will be exciting,” Ostapenko said.

The Latvian star also admires Collins’ authenticity: “She’s always herself. She doesn’t try to fit into anyone else’s expectations, and I respect that.”
